In order to provide the City of Eugene and its citizens with dedicated and responsive professional design services, a consultant team, all with offices located on or near Broadway, combined their talents to produce a conceptual design for the main east/west street in the heart of downtown Eugene (Satre Group Principal Rick Satre was the project’s landscape architect). The new street replaced the remnants of a pedestrian mall created some fifty years ago, which fell out of favor when businesses and shops fled or failed. The new street features 11-foot-wide traffic lanes with landscaped medians to create a sense of narrowing to slow traffic speeds, “bulb-outs” and raised crosswalks for pedestrian safety and comfort, conveniently located bike parking, widened sidewalks for business use and social interaction, and brick paving, site furnishings, and public art that provide enriching texture and detail.
