Springfield Mill Race 5th Street Trailhead

Springfield, OR

The Satre Group served as the landscape architect for the City of Springfield’s Springfield Mill Race Stormwater Management Facility and Multi-Use Pathway Trailhead project. Located south of Downtown Springfield, along the historic Springfield Mill Race, part one of the project included the brownfield cleanup of an abandoned sawmill site and its log pond, reshaping the land to provide a large stormwater catchment swale sized to collect piped storm runoff from a multi-block area of downtown, detain and vegetatively treat the runoff, and then directing the now-clean storm water into the adjacent mill race. Part two of the project included the design and development of a trailhead connecting downtown to the several-mile-long Springfield Mill Race Multi-Use Pathway., including bicycle and vehicle parking, restroom facilities, a mill race overlook and environmental education signage. Even here, stormwater was collected, vegetatively treated and then directed to the mill race where it shortly then enters the nearby Willamette River.
