Nestled between a forested area of Oregon White Oak, Doug Fir, and Madrone, and east facing grassy slopes with views to the Cascades, this new residence offered great potential for an improved and cohesive landscape.
Despite the home’s bucolic setting and neo-rustic design, with large windows offering a high degree of visual integration between the indoor and outdoor spaces, the landscape directly surrounding the residence was notably lacking. With a large and active family, our client was interested in creating a series of more functional flat spaces for entertaining and recreation, while simultaneously improving plantings and circulation around the residence.
Our design aimed at creating new landscape spaces adjacent to the home that would strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces while balancing the scale of the house and hillside with appropriately sized plantings. Additional design elements included an expanded hardscape area for entertaining family and guests, improved walkways and stairs around the home, new re-graded lawn areas for recreation, entryway improvements, and a 50-foot cascading water feature with pond for small fish.
Large basalt boulders were integrated into the landscape, accentuating the new native landscape plantings, while new lighting on trees and along the pathways highlighted the garden while improving safety.
